Sports develops a sense of physical fitness among the youth. Under the Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations (ASNPF), the Government of India has set up guidelines for all the National Sports Federations (NSFs) that work towards the development of specific sports disciplines.
The Government came up with the Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations (ASNPF) to financially assist NSFs that promote various sports. The guidelines of this scheme clearly demarcate the responsibility of various agencies involved in sports development. The Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations (ASNPF) emphasizes on professionalizing the administrative management of various sports federations.
The objectives of setting guidelines under the ASNPF Scheme are:
- Defining the areas of responsibility of agencies involved in the promotion of sports.
- Identifying National Sports Federations eligibility for coverage of government sponsorship and assistance, according to the guidelines of this scheme.
- Stating the eligibility conditions, which the Government will insist on, while releasing financial grants.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, The National Sports Federations and The Sports Authority of India are responsible for the implementation of the set guidelines. The responsibilities of MYAS includes determining eligibility conditions for the recognition of NSFs, laying of conditions that NSFs have to fulfill for availing government grants, and providing assistance to NSFs against agreed long-term development plans.
Each National Sports Federation is responsible and accountable for the overall management, direction, promotion, development and sponsorship of the discipline for which it has been recognized by the concerned International Federation. The SAI is responsible for providing financial assistance to the NSFs for training sportspersons, providing infrastructure and purchasing sports equipment.
