Sports Courses Available in India


The sports courses available at national institutes, provide students with a thorough understanding of varioussports disciplines and sports management skills.

1. The Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) in Patiala offers an M.Sc course in sports coaching, a post graduate diploma in sports medicine, a diploma in sports coaching and a six week certificate course in sports coaching; as well as advanced courses for in-service coaches, refresher courses in sports coaching and sports massage courses.

The six week certificate course in sports coaching is specially meant for physical education teachers. The Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports is the oldest sports institute in India, which provides coaching and academic training to all those who wish to start a career as a sports coach. The sports disciplines for which coaching courses are available are athletics, football, hockey, volleyball, wrestling, basketball, weightlifting, swimming, gymnastics, judo, boxing, cycling, fencing, handball, table tennis, kho-kho, kabaddi, softball and archery.

2. The National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS) in Goa offers courses in different types of water sports. It has a variety of courses for national and international students, who wish to learn various water sports and make a career out of it. The courses at NIWS are categorized into:
  • Skill Courses 
  • Professional Courses 
  • Management Courses
The skill courses include training courses in water sports, such as windsurfing, dinghy sailing, water skiing, river rafting, scuba diving and kayaking. These courses are for beginners, who are interested in learning such sports disciplines. Professional courses include courses on power boat handling, life saving techniques, jet-ski conversion and parasail boat conversion. These professional courses are for those people who are interested in making a career out of boat handling, or for those who wish to become lifeguards. The
management courses at the National Institute of Water Sports are a programme in watersport centre management, a watersports orientation programme for executives, a communication skills programme for watersports instructors, and an entrepreneurship development programme.

3. The Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE) in Kerala offers a Bachelor of Physical Education course, a Master of Physical Education course, and a Post-Graduate Diploma in health and fitness management. If you wish to take admission to any of these courses, you will have to go through a physical fitness test, a written test and an ability test, in any one sports discipline.

4. The Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Gwalior offers sports courses at the under graduate, post-graduate, PhD and certificate level.

All the above-mentioned sports courses in India, are meant to improve the skills of aspiring sports persons and coaches.
